In a nutshell, email can be hosted in one of three ways.

Exchange Hosting

Exchange hosting has been around for years but up until 5-6 years ago it was not affordable for most small businesses. Exchange hosting is the most accurate, real time email service that syncs (almost instantly) across all devices.

IMAP Hosting

IMAP Hosting has been around for a very long time and at one time is was a solid solution. We find that nowadays IMAP service has time out errors and does not sync like advertised. Services like Bellsouth, AT&T, Yahoo, & Gmail offer free IMAP sync. If you decide to try an IMAP service email, be prepared for some type of sync issues

Pop Hosting

Pop Hosting downloads the email and all of its content to you device. When you are using a Pop account on multiple devices, the devices folders will never be in sync and can cause some confusion in the long run

Recommendation

My favorite type of hosted email is Microsoft Office 365.
